Best Time to Elope in Squamish: A Month-by-Month Guide

· Adventure Weddings

Squamish doesn’t have a bad time to elope. Every season brings something different — from the long golden evenings of summer to the snow-dusted peaks of winter, from the explosive green of spring to the warm amber tones of autumn.

The right time depends on what you want: specific locations, weather tolerance, crowd levels, and the overall mood you’re after. Here’s what each month actually looks like.

January

Weather: Cold and wet at low elevations. Snow above 600m. Temperatures 0-6 C, frequent rain.

Light: Short days (8 hours of daylight). Golden hour starts around 3:30 PM.

Best locations: Shannon Falls (stunning in rain — the water flow is at its peak), Nexen Beach (dramatic storm light), Porteau Cove (moody ocean views).

Avoid: Stawamus Chief (icy chains, dangerous), Garibaldi Lake (snow-covered, road closed), Sea to Sky Gondola (may have limited hours).

Crowd level: Very low. You’ll often have locations to yourself.

The vibe: Intimate, moody, dramatic. Rain gear is essential, but the atmosphere is extraordinary. This is for couples who love weather, not just sunshine.

February

Weather: Similar to January but occasionally drier. Cold, wet, occasional snow at low elevations. 1-7 C.

Light: Days start getting longer. Golden hour around 4 PM.

Best locations: Same as January, plus the Sea to Sky Gondola if conditions allow (snow at summit creates a winter wonderland).

Crowd level: Very low. Valentine’s Day week sees a small uptick but nothing significant.

The vibe: Still moody winter, but you can feel spring coming. The forest smells incredible after rain.

March

Weather: Transition month. Rain is common, but sunny breaks become more frequent. 4-10 C. Snow melts at lower elevations.

Light: Daylight increases noticeably. Golden hour around 5 PM.

Best locations: Shannon Falls (peak waterfall flow from snowmelt), lower-elevation forest locations, Porteau Cove (calmer weather days become more frequent).

Crowd level: Low. Spring break may bring some visitors but nothing like summer.

The vibe: Renewal. The forest goes from grey-green to vivid green. Waterfalls are at their most powerful. There’s an energy to early spring in the Sea to Sky that’s hard to describe.

April

Weather: Rain still likely but warm spells begin. 6-13 C. Alpine snow still significant above 1000m.

Light: Days are getting long. Golden hour around 7 PM.

Best locations: Shannon Falls, Brandywine Falls (both at peak flow), lower Stawamus Chief trails (not summit yet), Porteau Cove, Nexen Beach.

Crowd level: Low to moderate. Weekends start seeing more hikers.

The vibe: Spring energy. Wildflowers begin appearing. The mountains still have snow caps but the valleys are green. Beautiful contrast for photography.

May

Weather: Drier and warmer. 10-17 C. Rain still possible but sunny days become the norm. Alpine snow begins retreating.

Light: Long days — golden hour around 8 PM. Incredible evening light.

Best locations: Most locations open up. Stawamus Chief becomes accessible. Sea to Sky Gondola is reliable. Shannon Falls, Porteau Cove, and Nexen Beach all at their best.

Avoid: Garibaldi Lake (still snow-covered and potentially dangerous until late June).

Crowd level: Moderate. The sweet spot between quiet shoulder season and busy summer.

The vibe: This is one of our favourite months. The landscape is lush and green, the light is extraordinary, and you can access most locations without the summer crowds. Highly recommended.

June

Weather: Warm and generally dry. 14-21 C. Occasional rain but mostly blue skies. The longest days of the year.

Light: Near-endless golden light. Sunset after 9 PM. You can shoot until 10 PM.

Best locations: Everything is accessible. Stawamus Chief, Sea to Sky Gondola, Shannon Falls, Porteau Cove, Smoke Bluffs. Garibaldi Lake opens later in the month.

Crowd level: High. Summer tourism begins in earnest. Weekdays still manageable.

The vibe: Peak conditions. Long, warm days. The mountains are snow-capped but the valleys are in full summer mode. If you want guaranteed good weather and every location available, June is your month.

July

Weather: The warmest month. 17-25 C. Very little rain. Clear skies are the norm.

Light: Similar to June — long golden evenings. Sunset around 9 PM.

Best locations: All locations at their peak. Garibaldi Lake is accessible and at its most turquoise. Stawamus Chief is ideal. Alpine wildflowers in bloom at higher elevations.

Crowd level: Very high. Squamish’s busiest month. Weekday mornings are essential for any semblance of privacy.

The vibe: Full summer. Hot at lower elevations, perfect at altitude. The Sea to Sky is at its most dramatic — every shade of green, blue sky, snow on distant peaks. It’s busy, but the conditions are unbeatable.

August

Weather: Hot and dry. 17-25 C. Risk of forest fire smoke, which can significantly impact air quality and visibility. This is the one downside of August.

Light: Still long but days start shortening. Golden hour around 8 PM.

Best locations: All locations accessible. Watch for fire closures in dry years.

Crowd level: Very high. Peak tourist season.

The risk: Wildfire smoke. In bad smoke years, visibility drops and the sky turns orange-grey. Beautiful in its own way (eerie, apocalyptic), but not what most couples want for their elopement. We monitor air quality closely and will recommend rescheduling if conditions are poor.

The vibe: Late summer. Warm, golden, and alive. The risk of smoke is real but most years are fine.

September

Weather: Warm days, cooler evenings. 13-20 C. Rain begins returning later in the month. Smoke risk diminishes.

Light: Golden hour moves earlier — around 7 PM. The quality of light shifts from summer-bright to autumn-warm.

Best locations: Everything still accessible. Stawamus Chief and Garibaldi Lake before they get too cold. Shannon Falls picks up flow from autumn rain.

Crowd level: Moderate. Labour Day weekend is busy, then it drops significantly.

The vibe: Our other favourite month. The crowds thin, the light turns golden, and the first hints of autumn colour appear. The air is crisp and clear. September is arguably the best photography month in the Sea to Sky.

October

Weather: Cooler and wetter. 7-14 C. Rain increases. Alpine locations become less reliable.

Light: Golden hour around 5:30 PM. Lower sun angle creates dramatic side lighting.

Best locations: Shannon Falls (moody autumn atmosphere), lower-elevation forest locations, Porteau Cove, Nexen Beach. Stawamus Chief still possible early in the month.

Avoid: Garibaldi Lake (closing for season), high-elevation locations.

Crowd level: Low. The Sea to Sky quiets down significantly.

The vibe: Autumn. Golden and amber tones in the deciduous trees. Dramatic clouds. The forest canopy provides shelter from rain. Deeply atmospheric and beautiful for photography.

November

Weather: Wet and cold. 3-9 C. Frequent rain, fog, and overcast. Snow returns to higher elevations.

Light: Short days — golden hour around 3:30 PM.

Best locations: Shannon Falls (powerful water flow), lower-elevation protected locations, Porteau Cove on clear days.

Crowd level: Very low. Near-total solitude at most locations.

The vibe: Moody and intimate. If you love rain, fog, and dramatic atmosphere, November is incredible. Not for everyone, but the couples who choose it tend to love it.

December

Weather: Cold and wet. 1-6 C. Snow at higher elevations. Occasional clear, crisp days.

Light: Shortest days — about 8 hours of daylight. Golden hour around 3 PM.

Best locations: Shannon Falls, Porteau Cove, lower-elevation spots. Sea to Sky Gondola on clear days (snow at summit is magical).

Crowd level: Very low except for holiday period.

The vibe: Winter magic. When you get a clear December day in the Sea to Sky, the mountains are snow-covered and the light is low and golden. Rare, but worth waiting for.

Our Recommendations

For the best overall conditions: June or September. June gives you the longest days and warmest weather. September gives you golden light, autumn hints, and fewer people.

For crowd avoidance: October through April. You’ll have locations to yourself and the atmosphere is extraordinary if you embrace the weather.

For alpine locations (Garibaldi Lake, Chief summit): Late June through early October. Snow blocks access outside this window.

For budget-conscious couples: Shoulder season (May, October) may offer more flexibility on vendor pricing and accommodation rates.

For photographs you’ll never forget: Any month works. Seriously. The Sea to Sky is photogenic 365 days a year. Rain, snow, sun, fog — each creates something unique.
