Squamish and Whistler are 45 minutes apart on the Sea to Sky Highway. Both are surrounded by extraordinary mountains. Both draw adventure lovers from around the world. And both are increasingly popular for elopements.
So which one should you choose?
We’re biased — we’re based in Squamish and we think it’s the best elopement location in BC. But we’re going to give you an honest comparison so you can make your own call.
The Scenery
Squamish
Squamish sits where the mountains meet the ocean. The landscape is defined by granite — the Stawamus Chief, Shannon Falls, the walls and crags of the Sea to Sky. Below the peaks, Howe Sound stretches like a fjord toward the Pacific.
The visual variety is extraordinary: ocean beaches, fjord coastline, 335-metre waterfalls, old-growth rainforest, granite summits, alpine lakes, and river estuaries — all within 30 minutes of downtown.
Visual palette: Green, grey, blue. Forest, granite, water.
Whistler
Whistler is a resort town in an alpine valley, surrounded by the Garibaldi Range. The landscape is defined by two major mountains (Whistler and Blackcomb), alpine lakes, and a European-style village. In winter, everything is blanketed in snow.
The scenery is spectacular but more homogeneous than Squamish — mountains and forest in every direction, without the ocean element.
Visual palette: Green and white (winter), green and blue (summer). Alpine forest, snow, sky.
Verdict
Squamish wins for variety. You can start your day at a waterfall, do your ceremony on a granite summit, and end at the ocean — all in one morning. Whistler has bigger mountains but less diversity.
Accessibility and Crowds
Squamish
- 45 minutes from Vancouver
- Small town feel (population ~22,000)
- Ceremony locations range from busy (Shannon Falls on a summer weekend) to deserted (Chief summit at dawn)
- Most locations are free to access (BC Parks)
- No resort crowds or tourist infrastructure at the ceremony sites
Whistler
- 90 minutes from Vancouver (or 45 from Squamish)
- Major resort town (population ~13,000 residents, but up to 2.5 million visitors per year)
- Whistler Village is crowded year-round
- Ceremony locations near the resort tend to have more visitors
- Backcountry locations are quieter but require more effort to reach
- Resort-adjacent services (luxury hotels, fine dining) are readily available
Verdict
Squamish wins for intimacy. Fewer tourists, less resort infrastructure, and ceremony locations that feel genuinely wild. Whistler wins for luxury amenities — if you want a spa, a five-star dinner, and nightlife after your ceremony, Whistler has more options.
Cost
Squamish
- Accommodation: $150-$350/night
- Dining: Excellent local restaurants, more affordable than Whistler
- Most ceremony locations: Free (BC Parks)
- No resort taxes or booking fees
- Photographer/officiant travel: Minimal (we’re local)
Whistler
- Accommodation: $250-$800/night (resort pricing)
- Dining: Higher end, resort pricing
- Some ceremony locations involve resort fees (e.g., Whistler Blackcomb ceremonies require event coordination fees)
- Resort Municipality of Whistler special events fees may apply
- Photographer/officiant travel: 45-90 min each way from most providers
Verdict
Squamish is significantly cheaper. The accommodation savings alone can be $200-$500+ per night. And because we’re based in Squamish, there’s no vendor travel fee.

The Vibe
Squamish
Squamish is an outdoor town, not a resort. It has the energy of a climbing community — laid-back, genuine, slightly gritty. Local coffee shops, craft breweries, farm-to-table restaurants. The people who live here are climbers, hikers, mountain bikers, and river surfers.
Your elopement in Squamish feels wild and real. There’s no resort veneer.
Whistler
Whistler is a world-class resort with a village built for visitors. The vibe is polished and international — luxury hotels, high-end shopping, fine dining. It’s beautiful but curated. You’re surrounded by tourists and resort infrastructure.
Your elopement in Whistler feels premium and pampered. The amenities are top-tier.
Verdict
This is entirely personal preference. Squamish for authentic adventure energy. Whistler for resort luxury.
